Each of us is a brand. We self-package ourselves every day when we get out of the house. Clothes, attitudes, the way people treat you at work. Lately it became the accomplished social recognition feeling you get when a few more people read your Blog or visit your LinkedIn profile.
For me it started a few years back. First it was Hi5 and Noi2. After that was Netlog, Colegi.ro, Xing, Ecademy, Naymz. Now is mostly Facebook and LinkedIn. I also started my blog on Blogger. These are the milestones of my presence in online and VSN (Virtual Social Networks).
It is time to clean the house. Not only to delete previous accounts, but to go deeper into reasons of being associated with a certain network and in selecting the people I am in contact with.
Why?
Because, in time, you pass through a process of knowing and defining yourself, you grow up in steps:
Step 1 – Planning/Defining – here I learned more about myself from my own experiences and from interacting with others
Step 2 – Implementation – there is a learning curve here represented for me by the singing-up on as many as possible VSN’s
Step 3 – Equilibrium – the moment I am now in: I am comfortable with my virtual self and the ways in which is promoted.
Step 4 – Path to reality – the moment in which you refine your online presence and go back to real life.
Therefore I made a plan:
1. I will delete completely the account on different websites that are redundant as information and members. For example: Ecademy, XING and Naymz are of no use to me because most of the people I am interested to stay in touch with are in my contact list on LinkedIn.
2. My blog is moved on my personal domain: www.emanuelgrigoras.ro
3. I will gather all my contacts lists and address books and do a one night filtering to decide who is part of my virtual/real life or not.
4. I will clear my contacts lists on LinkedIn because with a lot of people I did not exchange even one message.
5. Facebook – here I will postpone my decision until I will get an answer to my reporting of certain groups that are breaching the terms of the network with themes that focus on attacking Romanians and so on. I promise myself that I will stay away of a certain type politics and I expect Facebook to do same according to their own rules. If they do not do that, I will probably start my own VSN.
This is it for now. I have work to do.
